Mariner I-4 features a Duratec® 2.5L DOHC I-4 engine with 171 horsepower and 171 lb.-ft. of torque. It delivers an EPA-estimated mpg: 21 city/28 hwy (FWD); 20 city/26 hwy (4WD).
Want more power? Choose the Duratec 3.0L DOHC V6 engine on the Mariner V6 and Mariner V6 Premier, featuring 240 horsepower and 223 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s enough power to pull up to 3,500 lbs. when properly equipped, yet still provide an EPA-estimated mpg of 19 city/25 hwy (FWD); 18city/23 hwy (4WD). New for 2010, the available V6 engine is now Flex Fuel-capable.* It is designed to run on either gasoline or a unique blend of gasoline and ethanol known as E85 - which is made up of 85% ethanol, 15% gasoline - or any combination of the two. You simply choose which fuel to use and the vehicle’s on-board computer adjusts the engine for proper operation.
There’s also Mariner Hybrid, the world’s most fuel-efficient SUV** — equipped with a 2.5L 16-valve I-4 gas engine with a permanent-magnet electric motor. The combined electric motor and gas engine provide 177 net horsepower and 136 lb.-ft. of torque, with an EPA-estimated mpg of 34 city/31 hwy (FWD); 30 city/27 hwy (4WD).
All Mariner models feature the standard Easy Fuel™ capless fuel filler that eliminates the need to put the gas cap back on after fueling — there is no cap. After you remove the nozzle from the fuel tank, the seal is shut automatically. This convenient device is not only handy, it helps reduce harmful fuel tank evaporation emissions by removing the potential for a missing or incorrectly installed gas cap.
A smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission is standard on non-Hybrid models, while Hybrid models feature a standard electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (eCVT).
*EPA-estimated 14 city/19 hwy mpg (FWD), 13 city/17 hwy (4WD), when operating on E85.
**Based on unadjusted city fuel economy from EPA (10/08) and VCA (05/08). EPA-estimated 34 city/31 hwy mpg, (Mariner Hybrid FWD. Actual mileage will vary. Excludes vehicles built for Mazda.)
